Machine Shoulder Press

BeginnerMachine

The Machine Shoulder Press guides you through overhead pressing on a fixed path, taking most of the balancing out of the movement. That stability lets you concentrate on pushing hard through the shoulders, which makes it a good place to learn the pressing pattern and build base strength. Just be sure to mix in freer variations too so your stabilizers still get work.

How to do it

  1. 1

Sit upright in the machine with your shoulder blades pulled together and heels planted under your knees.

  2. 2

Keep your head, shoulders, and hips in contact with the back pad.

  3. 3

Grip the handles overhand, just outside shoulder-width.

  4. 4

Brace your core and press through your palms to extend your arms overhead.

  5. 5

Once your arms are fully straight, lower the handles back down under control without leaning back.
