Barbell Shoulder Press
The Barbell Shoulder Press is a heavy overhead pressing movement that builds the shoulders and supporting muscles. A barbell keeps both hands locked into one path, so you can focus on pushing hard rather than balancing two separate weights. It's one of the best builders of vertical pressing strength.
How to do it
- 1
Set the bar at about shoulder height and grip it just outside shoulder-width.
- 2
Dip under the bar so it rests across your upper chest, then unrack it and step back.
- 3
Rotate your elbows under the bar so your forearms point up and your feet are set a bit wider than your hips.
- 4
Press through your palms to drive the bar straight up overhead.
- 5
Lock it out so the bar sits over your ears, then lower it under control to your chest without leaning back.
