Behind the Neck Push Press

IntermediateBarbell

The behind-the-neck push press is an explosive overhead lift that uses a dip and drive from the legs to power a barbell up. Keeping the bar behind your neck can improve shoulder activation, but it also puts more demand on the rotator cuff, so it requires good mobility. It's built for developing power and pressing strength.

How to do it

  1. 1

Stand with feet hip-width apart and a barbell resting across the base of your neck, gripping it overhand.

  2. 2

Dip into a quarter squat by bending your hips and knees.

  3. 3

Explode upward, driving the bar overhead until your arms lock out.

  4. 4

Lower the bar back to your neck under control and repeat.

  5. 5

Keep your torso upright and core braced rather than leaning back.

  6. 6

Use a slightly wider stance for a stable base.
