HAMSTRINGS

Power Clean from Blocks

IntermediateBarbell

Setting the bar on blocks just below the knee lets you skip the pull from the floor, making the power clean more accessible and letting you focus on the explosive second pull. It's a full-body, power-driven lift that hammers the legs, hips, and back. Blocks also help lifters with mobility limits train the movement.

How to do it

  1. 1

Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, toes slightly out, and a loaded bar on blocks just below your knees.

  2. 2

Hinge at the hips and bend your knees to grip the bar overhand, hands shoulder-width apart.

  3. 3

With a neutral spine, press through your heels to pull the bar up close to your body as your legs extend.

  4. 4

As the bar passes mid-thigh, explosively extend your hips, knees, and ankles to drive it to chest height.

  5. 5

Snap your elbows under to catch the bar on your upper chest, palms up, dropping into a half squat.

  6. 6

Stand tall, then lower the bar back to the blocks.
