CALVES
Standing Barbell Calf Raise
Loading a barbell across your back lets you add far more resistance to the calf raise than bodyweight alone. Standing tall works the calves through a full ankle range while your legs stay mostly straight. A straightforward way for beginners to build lower-leg strength and mass.
How to do it
- 1
Set a barbell in a rack just under shoulder height.
- 2
Dip under it and rest the bar across your upper back, just below the neck.
- 3
Stand up to lift the bar off the hooks, then step clear of the rack.
- 4
Set your feet hip-width with toes turned out slightly and knees soft.
- 5
Push through the balls of your feet to raise your heels as high as you can.
- 6
Lower under control back to the floor, keeping your hips stacked over your heels.
